The Cuillin Hills, often simply referred to as the Cuillins, are a range of rugged mountains located on the Isle of Skye. They are divided into two main sections: the Black Cuillin, known for its dark, jagged peaks made of gabbro and basalt, and the Red Cuillin, characterised by gentler slopes and reddish-hued granite.
The Black Cuillin is particularly famous among mountaineers and climbers for its challenging peaks, including the iconic Inaccessible Pinnacle, which is the only Munro (Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet) that requires technical climbing skills to ascend. The Cuillin Hills offer a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, scrambling, rock climbing, and mountaineering. They are renowned for their dramatic landscapes, with steep ridges, deep corries, and sparkling lochs providing a breathtaking backdrop for outdoor adventures.
Elgol is a beautiful village located on the shores of Loch Scavaig, on the southwestern coast of the Isle of Skye. It is known for its stunning views of the Cuillin Hills across the water, making it a popular destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The village itself is charming, with traditional cottages and a small harbor where fishing boats and tour boats operate.
From Elgol, visitors can take boat trips to explore the surrounding coastline and nearby islands, such as the Isle of Soay and the famous Loch Coruisk, a remote freshwater loch nestled in the heart of the Cuillin Hills.
